Saturday 6/1/1903: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Detroit's Chappie McFarland had a terrific May, and it earned him the American Pitcher of the month award. He started 7 games in May, going 5-1 and compiling an ERA of 1.74 in 62 innings. Chappie fanned 26 hitters. Chappie pitched a shutout as well. This season McFarland compiled an ERA of 2.12, going 6-3 in 10 starts. He fanned 37 while giving up 82 hits in 89 innings. Chappie has pitched one shutout and 8 complete games. He's 6th in the American in ERA and 3rd in wins! St.Louis (N)'s pitcher Dummy Taylor is the National winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. His ERA of just 1.14 helped him to a 5-0 record in May. He worked 63 innings, striking out 27 hitters while walking 13. Dummy also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .235 against Dummy this season. While posting an ERA of 2.13 he went 7-2 in 11 starts, fanning 48 and walking 19 hitters. Dummy has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 2nd in the National in ERA and 3rd in wins!
 
Saturday 6/1/1903: Batter of the Month award winners announced
Charlie Hickman of Philadelphia (A) wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American. He hit .386 with 30 RBI and slugged .673 in 101 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .387, Charlie hit .333 and slugged .549. He has collected 32 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the American in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National's best player of the month was St.Louis (N)'s Sam Mertes, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .394 with 13 RBI and slugged .500 in 104 at bats. His season numbers are: .344 AVG, 53 hits, 11 doubles, no triples and 2 longballs, along with 18 RBI and 33 runs scored. He's 6th in the National in batting!
 
Wednesday 5/29/1903: Christy Mathewson pitches his 1st shutout of the season
BOSTON (A) - Detroit's right-hander Christy Mathewson didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Boston (A), recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Mathewson (4-5) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 65 of 104 pitches for strikes. Detroit's third baseman Billy Lauder stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Mathewson. Detroit scored 4 runs on 12 hits.
 
Monday 5/27/1903: Hickman and Joss win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American goes to Philadelphia (A)'s Charlie Hickman this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Charlie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .481 with 2 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .889. The Player of the Week award in the National goes to Philadelphia (N)'s Addie Joss this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.63 while going 2-0.
 
Monday 5/20/1903: St.Louis (N)'s Powell wins Player of the Week award
The American's best player of the week was Philadelphia (A)'s Chief Bender, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Bender was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 4 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.80 helped him to a 4-3 record this year. He struck out 35 and walked 11 in 70 innings. Chief has pitched one shutout and 7 complete games. He's 3rd in the American in ERA and 6th in wins! St.Louis (N)'s pitcher Jack Powell had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National Player of the Week. Jack went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00, while fanning 6 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 8 starts this year Jack struck out 27 batters in 71 innings of work. His ERA is 2.54, his record 7-0. He has 7 complete games and one shutout. He's 7th in the National in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Monday 5/13/1903: Doc White fires 2-hitter against Cincinnati
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s left-hander Doc White is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' White (4-3) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 55 of 95 pitches for strikes. Doc Nance helped White at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. Chicago (N) improved its record to 9-14, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.
 
Monday 5/13/1903: Beck (PHA) and Dolan (PHI) win P.O.W. award
Philadelphia (A)'s second baseman Erve Beck had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American Player of the Week. Erve went 13 for 22 (.591), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 4 RBI. Patrick Cozy Dolan wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Patrick Cozy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .526 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .737. Dolan has walked 6 times this year and posts a .341 OBP. While batting .282, 22 for 78, he has driven in 11 runs.
 
Monday 5/6/1903: Detroit's Briggs wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American goes to Detroit's Buttons Briggs this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Briggs was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 9 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 0.77 helped him to a 4-0 record this year. He struck out 16 and walked 5 in 35 innings. Buttons has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. He's 1st in the American in ERA and 1st in wins! Vic Willis of Boston (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for dominating National's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .253 against Vic this season. While posting an ERA of 2.66 he went 3-2 in 5 starts, fanning 29 and walking 14 hitters. He has 4 complete games and one shutout. He's 10th in the National in ERA and 4th in wins! He's 3rd in the National in saves!
 
Sunday 5/5/1903: Cy Falkenberg pitches 2-hit shutout against Detroit
BOSTON (A) - It was a great day for Boston (A)'s right-hander Cy Falkenberg. The 22-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Detroit on Sunday. Falkenberg (3-2) struck out 4 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Fred Clarke provided Boston (A) with the offense Falkenberg needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, doubling once. Boston (A) scored 1 run on 5 hits.
 
Saturday 5/4/1903: Eddie Plank blanks Boston (A) with a 2-hitter
CLEVELAND - Eddie Plank had some fun again. Boston (A) hitters did not. Cleveland's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 92 games started. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Plank (3-1) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 126 pitches. Cleveland's shortstop Monte Cross collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Plank. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Thursday 5/2/1903: Bill Donovan quiets St.Louis(A) bats with shutout
ST.LOUIS(A) - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander Bill Donovan. St.Louis(A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Donovan (2-2) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 77 of 121 pitches for strikes. George Browne helped Donovan at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Philadelphia (A) improved its record to 6-8, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
 
Wednesday 5/1/1903: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Chicago (A)'s pitcher Cy Young is the American winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He struck out 23 hitters in his 4 starts, putting together a record of 2-1 while pitching 23 innings. His ERA in April was 0.50. Cy also fired a shutout. Jesse Tannehill couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the National thought so as well, naming the left-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 4-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 1.25. He struck out 25 in 36 innings. Jesse also fired a shutout.
 
Monday 4/29/1903: Boston (A) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Bill Bernhard
CHICAGO (A) - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Bill Bernhard did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Boston (A). 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Bernhard (1-1) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 55 of 95 pitches for strikes. Duff Cooley helped Bernhard at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 2 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 4/29/1903: Young (CHA) and Wolverton (STN) win P.O.W. award
The American's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Cy Young, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Cy went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 11 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Harry Wolverton from St.Louis (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National. Harry went 15 for 28 (.536), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 8 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He has hit no taters while batting .513 this season. His 20 hits and 1 walks add up to a .548 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the National in batting and 1st in RBI!
 
Saturday 4/27/1903: Fred Glade shuts out Chicago (N) on 2 hits
ST.LOUIS (N) - Fred Glade took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. St.Louis (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 45 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Glade (2-0) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 98 pitches. St.Louis (N)'s catcher Peaches Graham finished with 1 hit in 2 AB, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Glade. St.Louis (N) scored 4 runs on 8 hits.
